Sometimes you can have two diamonds that are almost identical in appearance – however, one could have been created using CVD technology and another the HPHT method.
By learning about which is better cvd or hpht diamond are created, Malaysian customers can ensure they do not pay extra for diamonds that do not add any value.
Which is better CVD or HPHT diamonds?
Neither CVD or HPHT diamonds guarantee a better product. HPHT diamonds that have been well cut can be far better than poor cuts of CVD diamonds and vice versa. The actual diamond will have more of an impact on how great it appears.
How are CVD and HPHT Diamonds Made?
Both CVD and HPHT diamonds contain real diamonds that are made from crystallized carbon. Both have the same basic chemical composition and physical properties as mined diamonds.
How the Crystals are Formed
CVD – Diamond Creation using Carbon Gas
The CVD process uses a controlled chamber full of carbon rich gasses, often Methane and Hydrogen.
The carbon rich gasses are broken down by energy. This allows the carbon atoms to settle on a diamond seed. Over time more layers of diamond crystal will form.
CVD diamonds are formed under less pressure than HPHT diamonds. Some CVD diamonds will also be heated after creation to boost their colour.
HPHT – Diamond Creation using High Pressure
HPHT diamonds are created using high pressure and temperature.
Carbon is dissolved in a hot growth environment and crystallizes around a small diamond seed.
This can create clear diamonds and coloured diamonds. The HPHT equipment can also be used to enhance certain diamonds created using other methods.
Both of these methods can create real lab grown diamonds however they can be created differently.
Are CVD or HPHT Diamonds Better Looking?
Diamonds look great depending on the cut, colour, clarity and characteristics within.
Neither CVD or HPHT diamonds will guarantee a better looking diamond.
Sometimes CVD diamonds can appear with brown tones and stress lines inside. HPHT diamonds can sometimes have metal inclusions and odd fluorescence and phosphorescence.
These characteristics will not always be present and can only be seen using lab equipment.
A diamond with great proportions and light performance will often look better.
When picking an engagement ring diamond try to look at how the diamond looks in daylight, indoor lighting and from different angles.
Are CVD or HPHT Lab Made Diamonds Stronger?
Both CVD and lab made diamonds have the same basic diamond crystal structure.
They both have a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale meaning they are very scratch resistant.
However, this still doesn’t mean they are scratch proof. Both can be damaged by sharp impacts especially to the corners and edges.
The setting, shape and how you wear your diamond will have more of an impact.
Both diamonds will be protected by having a secure setting and regular checks.
Are CVD or HPHT Diamonds Cheaper in Malaysia?
It isn’t as simple as some retailers would like you to believe.
The price of a finished lab grown diamond will depend on many factors such as size, cut quality, colour, clarity, certification and retail price.
CVD or HPHT diamonds won’t always be cheaper.
Compare diamonds in Malaysia by asking for a price in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). Make sure they are similar in specification.
If you compare a 1 carat CVD diamond to a 2 carat HPHT diamond this won’t give you any useful information.
NOVITA Diamonds Malaysia will allow you to search for lab grown diamond jewellery. However, comparing the individual diamonds will ensure you get the best value.
Why Certification Matters More than How it was Created
You can learn more about your diamond with an independent grading report.
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) will grade your diamond on important features. They will be able to tell you how your lab diamond was created and what treatments were applied after creation.
Before buying, check the measurements, cut grade, colour, clarity and report number.
Certification will also help you know if you are getting a real lab diamond. Cubic Zirconia and Moissanite can look very similar.
With the grading information you can compare different diamonds if you are looking at NOVITA Diamonds Malaysia.
Which Diamond is Better for an Engagement Ring?
Start by looking at how the diamond looks. A round brilliant diamond with great proportions may be perfect if you want a diamond with lots of sparkle. Oval and Pear diamonds can look great for those wanting a longer look however the light performance can vary.
Consider the colour and clarity. You don’t need the highest grades to look great when set.
When comparing designs on NOVITA Diamonds Malaysia consider how the centre stone fits with the setting, proportions and how much you can spend.
